One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Toronto serves up the best green beans and I just can’t get enough. I always wondered what the secret was. What can elevate a simple green bean to this level of deliciousness? Thanks to Google and some research, I discovered that the secret was deep frying!
That’s right… deep fried green beans. Frying the beans in an inch of vegetable oil, blisters the beans and cooks them perfectly. Add some garlic black bean sauce, sugar and some toasted sliced almonds and you have yourself a killer side dish. Find the full recipe below.
Fried Green Beans and Black Bean Garlic Sauce

Ingredients
- 1 pound green beans, washed, trimmed and dried
- 1 heaping tablespoon Chinese black bean garlic sauce
- ⅛ teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted
- Vegetable or other neutral oil for frying
Instructions
- Heat 1 inch of oil in a pan and working in batches, fry the green beans for a few minutes until the beans begin to blister. Place the cooked beans in a bowl lined with paper towels and set aside.
- Meanwhile, in a large pan, heat the black bean garlic sauce, sugar and sesame oil and stir to combine. Add the fried beans and toss till well coated. Place on a serving dish and sprinkle with the almonds.
